The largest environmental disaster in U.S. history will yield the nation's largest settlement with a single entity, BP Exploration and Production Inc. has announced. The UK-based oil giant announced Thursday that it would pay more than $18.7 billion to settle hundreds of federal, state and local environmental and economic claims arising from the Eleven crew members on the rig perished, and vanished forever, in the explosion, which set off an 87-day gusher at the bottom of the gulf.
