Arts energize Mississippi's core subjects

The arts are driving up test scores and closing achievement gaps in more than 30 Mississippi schools that are blending music, theater, visual art and dance into core subjects. The Whole Schools Initiative , run by the Mississippi Arts Commission, trains teachers to integrate arts into core subjects such as math, science, English and history.

A federal judge granted bond for a 72-year-old man arrested three months ago after he was pulled over driving with a twice-convicted racketeer and a .22-caliber rifle , scope and silencer. U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel Knowles said Tuesday had concerns about the health of Dominick Gullo, but also remained concerned about photographs showing wooden kitchen chairs mounted in the cargo area of the van, facing out toward sliding glass windows in the side and rear of the van.

A resounding win in the national junior college game of the week has pushed Mississippi Gulf Coast up a notch in the latest national Top 20 Poll. The Bulldogs thumped then sixth-ranked Jones County 42-3 last week, and that win helped MGC move up one spot to third in this week's rankings as conducted by the National Junior College Athletic Association.
